Rationale
Printers are one of the most normalized privacy leaks in a home office.
People will use encrypted email, encrypted storage, and a privacy browser, then print tax documents through a cloud-connected inkjet with a vendor account, mobile app, Wi-Fi Direct, firmware telemetry, and subscription toner.
The goal is simple: keep the printer dumb, local, and isolated.
Hardening Notes
- Prefer USB first.
- Use Ethernet over Wi-Fi when network printing is needed.
- Put networked printers on an IoT or guest VLAN.
- Disable Wi-Fi Direct if unused.
- Change the printer admin password.
- Keep printer firmware updated.
- Avoid cloud print, vendor mobile apps, Alexa or Google integrations, and toner subscriptions.
- Block outbound internet from the printer if the router or firewall supports it.
- Prefer monochrome laser for sensitive documents.
- Avoid color laser printers for sensitive documents because many modern color laser printers embed forensic tracking codes. This is not limited to visible yellow dots.
- Buy new from Brother or an authorized retailer, not random marketplace sellers.
